I have made the journey to Kansas and seen the parent’s house for the first time yesterday. In a lot of ways it was much better than I imagined. It reminds me of many old houses that I’ve been in before. The walls are plaster, covered with wallpaper, which nowadays seems to be the factor most making it appear old. Wallpaper is definitely going the way of the dodo. I think they could potentialy bring some out though, because where the plaster is cracked, wallpaper would make a quick easy solution. Only it couldn’t be a patterned wallpaper, it would need to be either a solid color, or a paintable wallpaper.
The ceilings are nice and tall in this house, lending a feeling of having lots of un-used space above one’s head. I don’t know if that’s the condo dweller in me that feels that way, or if anyone these days would feel the same.
Dad refinished all the floors, except the floors where there is still (ugly) carpet. The wood looks nice and fresh. I know Sharole would prefer wider planks, these planks are all 2 inch wide, and all the wood has been stained the same color. I think Sharole would have gone for a darker stain.
As I look around, there are so many things I can think of to do to this place to make it ‘better’ but I would say that if it were my house, I wouldn’t necessarily complain. Not at all.
