Skinny Pants

As you all know I’m an avid mountain biker. See here for more examples. Now that the weather is quite chilly these days, shorts simply won’t cut it. Not to mention I’ve put on a bit of blubber so it’s harder than ever to get my shorts on – long story I’ll tell you that one sometime.

I might as well tell you that one now, the story isn’t that long. How many times do we say “long story” and then go ahead and it takes like 2 seconds to tell. I know that’s happened to me. So I’m on eBay browsing around and I see these mountain biking shorts, Kathmandu (which is a super overpriced brand here Aus-land) going for like $15 bucks. I’m like, “dude, that’s a bargain!” so I bid and won. When they came, they had a strap going around the waist, so you can slip them on and yank it tight. Problem was, the strap around the waist only opened so far, and it’s a bit of a struggle to get them over my bulbous derriere. Well I gained some weight recently and where does it head for first? My bulbous.

That was slightly  more than 2 seconds, but you know.

Anyway so I needed pants to ride in. I tried the black tights I have for running, but seriously, riding around with tights on just didn’t go well. So I’d been riding around in pegged pants.

That is, until I thought to myself, “Rather than go to all this trouble every time I want to ride, why not just make the pant legs narrower?” And so I did. And, I’ll be super cool because the result, the result would be just like those ultra hip kids going around in skinny pants. Oh yeah.

The plan was propelled into action the day I put my food through Willy’s pants, which were lying on the floor in the parental bedroom. This seems about the right diameter, so I used his pants for sizing purposes (16 cm) when determining how big an opening I’d need at the bottom.

It was harder than you might at first think. Those jeans did not want to just be stitched in a straight line, the actual cut of the leg was such that the back piece of fabric was bigger than the front piece, and the angle it was cut meant that I had to figure out how to stitch it without getting big ripples. I didn’t entirely succeed, but I would say that in the end I accomplished what I’d set out to do.

If you look closely, you can see where one of my knee patches is actually going at an angle into the seam. I know, you wish you had a pair. After thinking long and hard, I have decided that I will sell them to you.

For $600.00

Which is pretty reasonable considering what the market charges for designer looks such as this.

Speaking of fashion, did you know that designers, once they make their clothes, cannot copyright them? Watch all about it here.

All the Epilady

To the tune of “All the Single Ladies”

Just the ‘all the single ladies’ part (over and over). I have no idea what any of the other words are, and I think I saw a clip of the music video once when Kanye West was making a duck of himself at the Grammys. The one move I can remember from the music video looked like halfway between ‘running man’ and ‘nordic track’.

So anyway all the epilady refers to an incident this morning where I made one eyebrow shorter than the other, as in one is farther from the middle of my forehead than the other, the gap between them is leaning to one side. This is because I usually close my eyes when I take the epilady to my eyebrows, and results are difficult to control when one’s eyes are closed. Maybe next time I’ll try tape as a barrier to how far over the machine can go. Excellent idea, me!

On the Catwalk

I’m a model you know what I mean
And I do my little turn on the catwalk
Yeah on the catwalk on the catwalk yeah
I do my little turn on the catwalk

I’m too sexy for my shirt too sexy for my shirt
So sexy it hurts…

‘Cos I’m a model you know what I mean
And I do my little turn on the catwalk
Yeah on the catwalk on the catwalk yeah
I shake my little tush on the catwalk

Anyone recognize this song? It’s from I’m too Sexy by Right Said Fred a one hit wonder band. It was a unforgettable tune and lyrics for me. It’s amazing how many neat songs in the world have been the only known song from a singer or group.

Anyway I diverse. Recently I had the opportunity to go to my first Catwalk Fashion Show. I had asked my niece what she’d like to do for her birthday and that was what she chose. I did a search on the internet and before long I had found a show and booked the tickets via Ticketek.

November 12th was our outing. Brooke and I ventured off to the city, for a girls night out. We only took a slight detour on the way there near the end, there was a new tunnel, and some roads I’d not been on before, but we course corrected (there may have been one illegal turn oops…), parked and headed inside.

There were around 120 stores represented, many of which I’d never heard, most of which Brooke had, some nice things and some garbage, and, some really good prices. There were huge discounts from the original prices, up to like 70%.

We managed to see all 4 catwalk presentations. They used the same models for each segment. They were 30minute shows (2 hours all up). Brooke was familiar with several of the models some from a TV show called “Australia’s next top model (?). Funnily enough whilst getting my hair cut on Saturday and flipping through the magazines one the models we saw, was in Cosmopolitan.

My observations:

* I had just assumed that all the models are taught to walk the exact same way, all these models had definite differences to their walks. Some were slouchy (bad posture), another had this kick up out the back. I started to see how some become more well known and supermodels than others.

* I had assumed they always had just about nothing in the bust department. There was actually a variety of sizes, from nothing to a full C cup. All wearing no bra’s, some were heading south quite fast.

* One of the models had a large scar down her leg and it hadn’t ended her carrier. Good to see :)

* Most were spray tanned from head to toe, but one model had only her chest up spray tanned.

* My favourite was as we sat in the front seats for the catwalk shows (3 out of 4 were great odds, we thought). I could see lots of stretch marks and in a variety of places. Granted none on their tummies (YET) but legs, butt, arms etc…. yes…. it was nice to see that they too are human and are susceptible to each of our gene pools and life.

* With the large screens visible on their walk back, most of the time they spent it looking at themselves.

* It was mostly women in the place (spectators and shoppers). I wondered if the Models were thinking these women are probably picking us apart.

*I’d never really thought about their hair that much. I noticed that each segment had it’s own hair style where all the models had the same do. We noticed they all had long hair and similar lengths also.

* Some of the models definitely seemed to enjoy their job more than others, some looked so miserable with their grumpy face on, it was as if you could tell which ones seemed to have nice personalities and which ones didn’t! Some really played up to the camera’s at the front of the catwalk, it added to the experience I thought.

* I wonder why the walk means that feet, legs, body then shoulders and head come last, how does that enhance the clothes?

* The shoes they were wearing were mainly so tall and looked so hard to walk in I could see the stiletto backs slide , by the end of the night I could see red marks and rub marks etc… on all of their feet, some shoes didn’t fit so their toes were hanging off the front and others, were too big. The walkway is so smooth and shiny that I was surprised with those massive high heels that someone didn’t slip. You’d want to soak your feet after for sure I felt, ouch….

4.5 hours later we were done and the event was over. We headed home. Brooke got a manicure and painted nails, I got a large arm bag and Gigi yep Gigi got a designer summer dress at a major bargain ($10).

I’d definitely go again. It was so nice to get out of the house and get some special time with Brooke (my niece). It was a new experience, a 1st for us both.

A great night was had :)

Update – Posh’s hair

On a lighter note than the previous post, I believe Victoria Beckham must have seen our unkind remarks on her hair in this other post. She has now rid herself of the reverse mullet the only way one really can, and that is to go shorter. She now reminds one of a bonier Halle Berry. or one of the Olsen twins. Or a teenage boy at prep school.

Reverse Mullet

What hairdo has a party in the front and business in back? The wedge cut, thanks to trend setter Posh Spice (aka Victoria Beckham aka she who only eats only one rice cake per week). Now I am a huge fan of the wedge where it is properly applied, Posh looks great in hers, but many of those copycatters should really just go back to whatever they figured out worked best in the 80’s.

I would accept a Wasatch Front over a bad wedge cut.

More on mullets here and here. Song about mullets here.

Not to ring any of my own bells, but tonight I managed to convince my husband to come and watch the movie “Sex in the City” I was really feeling like a girlie movie and it didn’t disappoint. I got to see fashion, an apartment done up, shoes, got to laugh hard, cry (yes cry, I’m pregnant it’s allowed) and feel lots of emotions, I was entertained.

However the highlight of my evening was seeing an item from my own wardrobe on Carrie Bradshaw. Not to say that she is in the know of all things of great fashion but I’m sure it’s not often one of us girls get to see an item from our wardrobe on a movie screen!

I was my argyle socks, red, white and black. I have been given several compliments over them since purchase, which btw I purchased in Australia last year and also bought my sister a pair because they were truly AWESOME!~

There is nothing like owning an item that when it’s put on each time, you can say “boy do I love these”. These socks do that for me.

It’s at times like this I love being a girl.

Tie + Velcro = Hair

Posted: 19/05/2008 by Toby in Informative

I’ve discovered a great way to make my tie grow hair. Simply take the tie, and brush it repeatedly with velcro. I believe this process may be akin to the process of ‘carding’ only in this case, I’m taking the end product and turning it back into fibers ready for spinning.

I’ve decided to desist in the interest of the tie.
